Some newer credit cards have the card number printed on the signature strip on the back of the card, along with some additional digits. These additional digits are called the VCC Code. It might look like this:
1234 5678 9012 3456 123
<-- card number --> VCC
The VCC Code is an additional safety feature because it's not recorded when your card is run through an imprinter. If a crook should recover the credit card slip carbon papers from a garbage can, or find out your card number in some other way, he may still not know the VCC Code that goes with it.
For phone and mail orders you can identify yourself as a person who has access to the physical card by providing the VCC Code.
As this is a relatively new feature, the situation is not quite clear yet. We may be able to get authorization for charging your card even without the VCC Code, but this may change at any time, and to avoid possible problems, we ask you to provide your VCC Code, if your card has it.
